Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia (IST)

June 11th, 2010 by speedarich

Inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST) is a condition in which an individual's resting heart rate is abnormally high (greater than 100 beats per minute), their heart rate increases rapidly with minimal exertion, and their rapid heart rate is accompanied by symptoms of palpitations, fatigue, and exercise intolerance. It is more common in women, and (while one hopes not) this may be why it is all too often written off by doctors as “anxiety.” Read about IST, its causes and treatment, here.

Almost Half of American Adults Have a Potentially Heart-Damaging Chronic Health Condition

May 29th, 2010 by speedarich

A staggering statistic by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) was released earlier this week, suggesting that 45% of people living in the United States are living with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Having one or more of these conditions is a recipe of heart disease if not properly addressed. Additionally, this reccently published survey found that 15% of Americans had one of these conditions undiagnosed. It's a reality check for many of us that are following a typical Western diet of fatty and carb-laden foods.

High blood glucose levels can contribute to high cholesterol, and both can work along side high blood pressure levels to cause detrimental effects on your heart. So, if you haven't had your cholesterol checked — as well as your blood sugar and blood pressure — please do so soon. All of these conditions contribute to heart disease — especially when left untreated. Getting tested isn't as hard as you think, either. There are many places you can go to do this (and sometimes for free), including local health fairs, the health department, your local pharmacy, and your physician's office. Your heart will definitely thank you later.

Wii Gets American Heart Association Seal of Approval, AHA Gets $1.5 M

May 29th, 2010 by speedarich

This week, the American Heart Association announced that it is allowing Nintendo to place its coveted “heart check” logo on its popular Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort video games.

In the past, the AHA heart check logo has been reserved for food products that have met the organization's criteria for cholesterol and saturated fat. The AHA is endorsing the Wii products in this way because the games encourage a certain amount of physical activity, to the extent, apparently, that the organization is compelled to redefine and expand its usage of the heart check logo.

While many Wii games do indeed require significantly more physical movement, and burn more calories, than typical video games, it is not at all clear that they approach the benefit of “real world” sports (many of which require actual running and the like). One wonders whether the AHA might have done better awarding its heart check logo to, say, a manufacturer of soccer balls.

And perhaps some day the AHA will – perhaps when the makers of soccer balls see fit to “donate” $1.5 million to the organization, as Nintendo has done as part of this deal.

Turmeric May Boost Liver Health

April 30th, 2010 by speedarich

New research suggests that a compound found in turmeric (a key ingredient in curry) may help protect against liver damage. In their study on mice, scientists determined that the compound known as curcumin may help lessen the inflammation linked to cirrhosis (a potentially fatal disease marked by scarring of the liver).

For the study, researchers focused on mice with chronic liver inflammation. After following a curcumin-enhanced diet for four or eight weeks, the mice experienced a significant reduction in liver cell damage and scarring. It's likely that these benefits stem from curcumin's ability to curb inflammation, according to the study's authors.

Past research indicates that turmeric may help fend off a number of other inflammation-related diseases, including type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.
